Django vs Shopify

Django or Shopify? An honest comparison of what each is for, how they differ and how to choose, with no benchmarks and no hype.

Pick Django if you are building content-driven sites, internal tools, and product back ends written in Python. Pick Shopify if you are building online stores, from single-product shops to large catalogues.

Django — A batteries-included Python web framework with an admin interface built in — first appeared in 2005. Shopify — A hosted commerce platform that handles payments, checkout and inventory — first appeared in 2006. Both are in active use, and neither is going away, so this is a fit question rather than a right-and-wrong one.

The honest summary: most teams choose on what they already know, what their deployment target allows, and which ecosystem has a library for the awkward part of their problem. The sections below lay out where each one fits so you can check your situation against them.

Last reviewed 20 September 2026. No benchmarks here on purpose — performance depends on what you build, not on which name wins an argument.

Where each one fits

Where Django fits

A batteries-included Python web framework with an admin interface built in. Content-driven sites, internal tools, and product back ends written in Python. A large set of reusable apps, plus Django REST Framework for APIs.

  • The admin site saves weeks on internal tools
  • ORM, migrations, auth and forms included
  • Security defaults are sensible
  • Clear conventions across projects

Trade-offs

  • Opinionated structure is harder to deviate from
  • Async support arrived later than in newer frameworks
  • The ORM hides SQL until performance work forces it out

Where Shopify fits

A hosted commerce platform that handles payments, checkout and inventory. Online stores, from single-product shops to large catalogues. An app store covering shipping, marketing and fulfilment, plus APIs for custom storefronts.

  • Checkout, payments and compliance handled for you
  • No servers to run
  • Large app ecosystem for commerce needs
  • Themes get a store live quickly

Trade-offs

  • Monthly fees plus transaction costs
  • Customisation is bounded by the platform
  • App subscriptions accumulate

How to choose

How much time you have to learn. Shopify has the gentler on-ramp of the two; Django asks for more up front (moderate) and pays it back in what it lets you express.

How much you want the compiler to check. Django: Python, dynamically typed. Shopify: Liquid templating, JavaScript for extensions. On a codebase several people touch for years, that difference compounds.

What you are actually building. Django is typically used for content-driven sites, internal tools, and product back ends written in Python. Shopify is typically used for online stores, from single-product shops to large catalogues. If one of those describes your project, the decision is mostly made.

What your team already knows. Shipping is faster in the option somebody on the team has used in production, and that usually outweighs any difference on paper.

Library coverage for your problem. Django: A large set of reusable apps, plus Django REST Framework for APIs. Shopify: An app store covering shipping, marketing and fulfilment, plus APIs for custom storefronts.

Where it has to run. Django: Python runtime, usually behind WSGI or ASGI. Shopify: Shopify's hosted platform. Deployment constraints decide more of these arguments than language features do.

Frequently asked questions

If you have no strong reason either way, start with Shopify — it has the gentler on-ramp of the two. Pick Django first if the work in front of you is content-driven sites, internal tools, and product back ends written in Python, because learning a tool on a real project beats learning it in the abstract.

Often, yes. Plenty of production systems combine tools from this list — one for the part it suits and one for the rest. Treat this comparison as "which should own this job", not "which do I commit to forever".

Job markets are local. Look at what is actually advertised in your city or in the remote listings you would apply to, rather than at global popularity. The Django and Shopify community pages on DEVAE show which members work with each, and you can ask them directly.
