Java on DEVAE
The Java hub leans toward people working on services that have to stay up: Spring Boot APIs, event-driven systems, banking and enterprise integrations, and the JVM performance work that comes with them. It is also where students learning Java for coursework or interviews find people a few years ahead of them. Threads cover architecture and tooling as much as syntax — module layouts, testing, observability, migrating between Java versions — and rooms are used for walking through a heap dump or a slow query with the terminal shared.

Basel's software demand comes overwhelmingly from pharmaceutical and life sciences companies, so bioinformatics, clinical data systems and regulated software engineering dominate. It sits where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, and cross-border commuting into the city is routine.
